Post subject: PRR M1b 6755 Has Been Moved
PostPosted: Thu Jan 03, 2002 10:40 pm

As part of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania's massive track realignment and replacement program, the Museum's PRR M1b 4-8-2 No. 6755 was moved on Wednesday, January 2. Strasburg crews used their 44-tonner and a steam locomotive to move the engine from its old location on a sharp curve at the Yard public entrance to a new straight section of track along Rt. 741 at the north end of the Yard. Interestingly, two of the blind drivers of the M1b which hung precariously on the edge of the rail at the old location did not derail when the engine was moved--also attesting to the professionalism of the SRR crew who handled everything with kid gloves. It was the first time the M1b has been moved in 11 years.

Seth: I was in Pittsburgh on Wednesday so my posting was based on eyewitness accounts from other staffers. I believe our webmaster, Jim Alexander was present; he is our "designated" digital photographer, so check the RRMPA web site (see link below); I'm not sure if anyone else present had a camera, as it the move was done with little advanced warning. Incidentally, I found out today that Strasburg's 2-10-0 #90 did the honors with the 44-tonner, and the move required a lot of careful oiling and greasing of the massive 4-8-2.

Howard: The last cab rider in the M1b was likely the "spirit" of the late RR Museum curator, Ben Kline. He was the last one to move the engine into its previous resting place and vowed that it would be a long time til it ever moved again. God rest his soul.
