Here's a photo of the "famous" CRI&P 4-6-2 #886: http://abpr2.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi? ... i+p886.jpg When the City of Peoria, Illinois wanted a steam locomotive for display, they requested this Pacific since the 886 was the last Rock Island steamer to enter Peoria on the CRI&P. And the railroad obliged and put the 4-6-2 into the cities Glen Oak Park. Only, the engine had a secret; it wasn't REALLY the 886. When the railroad went to pull that engine off of the dead line, they found out how badly it had deteriorated. And so, the railroad pulled a fast one, grabbing sister P-31 class locomotive #887 instead. Some paint, and a different number board, and presto, the 887 became 886. And no one in Peoria was apparently the wiser. Some people at the railroad knew about the switch, and eventually the story became known. But no one in Peoria knew, at least not then. And so, through a couple of moves to different locations including the latest one at its present home, the Wheels of Time Museum in nearby Dunlap, Illinois, the 887 has remained 886. Even when it was pointed out that maybe it was time to give number 887 her real identity back, the owners said no. And so, unlike NKP Berk "767" becoming once again the 765, the 4-6-2 in Dunlap remains what it has been since 1955, an imposter! Les |
