I found this in a travel-log of a journey through the Bolivian salt desert (not to unlike the Bonneville salt flats in Utah). The website says that these pictures are of the remains of some kind rail terminal built to develop the desert area around the town of Uyuni.

I can count at least eight engines. The track is narrow gauge and some of the engines seem to be inside-framed 2-8-2s or 2-10-2s of mid-century vintage. Fascinating what gets left in the middle of nowhere.

The fourth picture down, the firbox is very wide. Could this be a Garrett?

There are Garratts & Kitson Meyer types there - this is the well known Uyuni dump...

If you go to http://www.steamlocomotive.info/search.cfm

and type Uyuni in the field City, you'll get a list of locomotives believed to be at Uyuni

I can just hear Robert Redford saying: How do you know? This might be the garden spot of the whole country. People may travel hundreds of miles just to get to this spot where we're standing now. This might be the Atlantic City, New Jersey of all Bolivia for all you know.

If ever you get discouraged about your own equipment rusting away, just look at these pictures!

How far away ARE these pieces from any sort of civilization?
