For a variety of annoying reasons, I was recently forced to develop a website that played nicely with the web browsers in cell phones. This had nothing whatsoever to do with railroads, trains, or preservation. But... Also being the webmaster of www.steamlocomotive.info, it prompted me to take a look at steamlocomotive.info with a mobile browser (in this case, a Blackberry) and it was completely unusable. (No surprise there). Anyhow, I've registered the domain name steamlocomotive.mobi and am in the process of developing a site based off the same database as steamlocomotive.info. It will, of course, be a much simpler site, but I hope to make it useful and usable. To that end, I guess, I'm soliciting some input. At the minimum you'll be able to enter a city name, or a partial name and get back a list of locomotives in that city. Click on a locomotive in the list and get more information. Most modern cell phones have GPS receivers and know where they are. Would it be useful to be able to do two things? 1. Be able to click a link that brings up a list of locomotives within, say, 100 miles of your current location? 2. Be able, by clicking a button on the locomotive display, to report its GPS coordinates directly back to the steamlocomotive database? What else would you like to be able to get, while you're out using the web browser on your mobile phone? Or is this just a waste? Regards, Doug |

Doug, that all sounds great to me! Right now the only rail-related thing I do with my Blackberry is occaisionally check the Interchange. Stephen |
