I need a locomotive steam shistle. My first choice is one off of a Texas and Pacific Railway Road Engine. Research shows them to be a 5 chime, 6 inch. medium length whistle. My second choice is one as described above off of an SP locomotive. Third choice woud be one as described above off of any other road. Fourth choice would be a 3 or 5 chime off of any railroad. This whistle is to replace our whistle stolen off of the SP 745 down in New Orleans. I do have a line on one that I will probably buy if I like the sound but still want one as described above. Any one with any information other than E bay (I am already watching there) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Hello Bill.
Take a look here:

He doesn't supply the valves though...

Try this:

The whistles look good, sound good, and don't cost an arm and a leg. They even have an SP version. For the price of one original off E-bay, you could have a few of these, for some variety!

Try googling

Western Railway Supply

Boothman & Johnson

I don't see the whistle you are looking for @ B&J, but if you had blueprints, either/both might be able to do a custom fab.

I have their steptop version of the "Southern" 3 chime. It was something like $300 plus shipping. (At 32# shipping might be a bit steep depending upon the method)...finding a 1-1/2" valve for it has been a bit trickier than I initially thought.

Bill,

I just have to ask, what were the circumstances of the whistle's departure?

What can we do to keep an eye out for it? Are there special markings on it?

Just want to help if I can.

Check out http://www.jeffhosford.com. He will fabricate or cast, and with integral valves. His bases are based (pardon the pun) off the SP/Star Brass design and I believe he's made replica SP 6 and Star Brass 5-chimes (very similar to the SP short-bell "desert chimes"). The prices are not cheap, but the craftsmanship looks exquisite and it still beats the $5k+ an original might go for on eBay...

A friend of mine found a local foundry that poured bronze and had the plans for an SP long-bell 5 (used exclusively on a dozen or so MTs built at the Sac. Shops) -- found he could have the bells cast for about $700 a piece. If you're willing and able to machine, perhaps going that route, and buying one of his base kits, might be the most affordable option for you. Good luck.
