The photograph below of a little 0-4-4-0T said to have been build by Baldwin in 1916 was contributed to steamlocomotive.info by Phil Horton of the UK, and for which we are most grateful. The locomotive was built for a sugar company in Serbia. Does anyone have more information about it?

That is a Pechot-Bourdon locomotive originally designed for the French military and wound up being used in somewhat large numbers behind the front lines in WWI. Baldwin was contracted to build some in order to speed up production, ending up making 280 of them. Essentially a double Fairlie but with some minor differences, single dome instead of two, coupling on the bogies instead of the frames etc. That is one of two surviving, the other being in a museum in Dreden, Germany. From what I have been told but have been unable to confirm, the Serbian locomotive was built for a coal mine and never served in France. Roger |

I think that there was at least one in Brazil though whether this was new build or ex-French is unknown to me. I think the Brazilian Army were the users.. |
