These have been sitting out of service for many years. But when I last looked at them, they appeared to be complete.

They look remarkably like a group of Baldwins that appeared at this same GovLiquidation site over a year ago... Wonder if THAT sale fell through..

When I climbed over these engines several years ago, there were twice as many out of service as are for sale this time. So this could either be the 2nd batch, or because of the cutting and movement restrictions, the prior sale could have fallen through.

Is that a coach in the margins of the photo?

There are, or were several coaches still on the property when I last looked around. Can't tell you much about there history or heritage. Several have damage from a big derailment on base many years ago.

Hah!!! I'd wondered just what happened to these things!

As a bit of trivia, these locos switched what had been the Crane Naval Ammunition Depot, later the Naval Weapons Support Center, a 100-square-mile facility southwest of Indianapolis with 175(!) miles of plant railroad. It was located near the end of one of the national railroad system's odd-trivia stretches of track: The Milwaukee Road's odd incursion into southern Indiana via the former Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern.

The NRHS Bulletin V. 45 #1 1980 has a nice little article on this odd line, including an October 1975 b/w photo of one of these Baldwins painted in Bicentennial white with red and blue stripes, along with two similarly painted heavyweight passenger cars; these might be the coaches referenced earlier.

French Lick and Corydon are, relatively speaking, a stone's throw away; Whitewater Valley (which already has one odd diesel collection) is perhaps another stone throw. These relics may be in horrible condition (if they are, leave 'em for the scrappers or parts vultures), but if they're cosmetic basket cases with low miles and sound engines/wheels/etc., well..... first bid is $50...... On the other hand, they identified all these locos by the same US Navy locomotive number, 65-00292, so...........

We have the info. , also photos when they were in red White & blue for the Bi-centennial. I guess the first bidders in 2005 didn't act fast enough!

We looked at them a few year ago too. These photos are old.

IIRC, SMS knows about them and was supposed to be "interested" in one with rollers. I thought there were 2 with rollers back then. One had a real good set of wheels on both trucks if I remember correctly.

Anyway, they were supposedly sold and the the owners ran into issues getting CPRS to accept them for interchange. If you look at the photos of #2 it looks like one of the truck frames has been cut or broke. One of the big issues keeping them in one piece is no interchange (then anyway, INRD may be different) and no torches allowed on base. Torches and live ammo/explosives don't mix well. :) Looks like T-spot has the info.

As for the coaches, they are all ex-MILW Hiawatha cars, except one. I seem to remember 7 total, 6 MILW, including one lost in the woods down a hill, plus a Clerestory style morgue car.

There were several cars with severe sill/frame/draft gear damage from a runaway which left one in the woods. There was still one car in REAL good shape structurally, as it was being used on base for family outings, etc. but it had issues with broken springs I believe. Several of the coaches were dubbed "the Mayor's cars", as they were already spoken for by the Mayor of Jasper IN. Government entities get first crack over museums. Last I heard they were in fact moved to Jasper and were being refurbed for use on Indiana Railway Museum trackage to French Lick and the new casino resort complex.

Then there was the morgue car, which I dont' think was former MILW, but a military veteran. It was used to haul loaded caskets during WWII and Korea.
