Kansas City Southern 0-8-0 #1023 at Kansas City in September of 1950:

Although the KCS had a number of interesting steam locomotives including 2-10-4's, second hand 2-10-2's and 2-8-8-0's with Vanderbilt tenders, the only steamer it saved was "lowly" 0-8-0 #1023 which was donated to the City of Pittsburg, Kansas in 1955. But 1023 started life a little more glamorous; as 2-8-0 #488, built for the KCS by the Pittsburgh plant of ALCO in 1906. In steam days, a number of railroads converted older 2-8-0's into 0-8-0's for switching service (KCS did the conversion on 1023 in 1925) but 1023 may be the only surviving example of a locomotive so converted. If there are any others out there, corrections are welcome.

Another interesting facet of this photograph is the three dome tank car in the background. Three dome tank cars have been preserved in museums, but are any of the existing examples like this one, with the middle dome of a different size than the other two? Again, if such examples exist, that info is also welcome.

I would guess that that tank car was originally a single dome and then compartemnts and domes added to use as a three dome. IRM has a two dome (two compartment) CPVX 101 that was originally a single dome shell. The old opening for use in its single dome incarnation was filled and plated over with steel, but the rivets and outline tells the tale.

When I first saw this photo of #6947, the three domes on the boiler made me think it was one of the couple of Canadian Pacific 0-6-0's that have been preserved. Not so! Number 6947 is the only surviving CP 0-8-0! AND, she started out life as a Consolidation! Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in September of 1908 as CP #1737, she was renumbered in 1913 as #3537. And then in September of 1928, the CP converted her to a class V-4-a 0-8-0. So, KCS #1023 isn't the only surviving 0-8-0 converted from an older 2-8-0!

I'm not quite sure where 6947 is currently located. The Canadian Pacific sold her in 1959 to the Manitoba & Saskatchewan Coal Company at Bienfait, SA. In 1969, M&SCC donated her to the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association in Edmonton, AB. Now there is a report that she is on display in Sandon, British Columbia. Whether that report is true or not, she seems to be coupled to a freight car of some type, so perhaps she is displayed in some type of museum setting. Anyone know for sure?
