Hello,
I am wondering about Soo Line 1003. I will be in the Milwaukee area over the summer for a few days and I am hoping to her. How is she displayed? Is it easy to get a picture of her?

Says on the website that it's "storeed for viewing" so you should be able to get near it.

I was hoping that someone associated with the owning group would post the answer, but since that hasn’t happened, I’ll tell you what I know:

Soo Line 1003 lives in the Wisconsin Automobile Museum in Hartford, WI, maybe 45 min. NW of Milwaukee. It’s a nice drive, and a nice area. See: http://wisconsinautomuseum.com/

The engine should be viewable any time the museum is open, but you will have to pay an admission, which is OK; it’s a nice museum. Hartford was the home of the Kissel Automobile, and you’ll see more Kissels there than anyplace else in the world, also a lot of other historic autos.

Now the bad part. The indoor storage for the locomotive is the old indoor loading dock, which is on the SECOND floor, believe it or not, as the railroad is on the hillside behind and above the museum building. It’s great that the engine is inside, but it is along a high level dock. Great for maintenance, not so good for viewing, terrible for photos. Given that the engine lives indoors in a somewhat climate controlled environment, I’m certainly not complaining, but to really see the engine, you need to catch it out on the road.

The engine is separated from the public by a railing, and as far as I know, there are no tours; the museum staff aren’t really knowledgeable about it, nor do they have the staff. Any need for access for measurements, whatever, is going to require pre arrangement with either the 1003 group or the museum.
