A feature by William Volkmer and John Smatlak on the Waterfront Red Car Line in the Spring 2008 issue of Classic Trains reports: "The pending abandonment of freight service in San Pedro in 2009 will also open up additional route options that were unavailable when the line began service (July 10, 2003)."
