Post subject: | New Year's Resolution. |
Folks, Earlier this week at my newspaper job, I was doing some business reporting. I was interviewing the director of a downtown business support group, who was giving me the litany of small business comings and goings. He made a remark that bounced around my skull for some while and then returned to me when I opened this page today. I asked him about businesses closing and he said, "It's the time of the year when the accountants tell their clients to shut down--there's no more money for them to continue." It brought to the top of my mind this fact: As much as we do railway preservation for altrustic reasons, please remember that it is nothing more than a small business trying to afford to do all the things it should and could do. It's a small business trying to do some of the most expensive work on the Earth. It runs on big bucks. Where do they come from? Yes, some of them come from foundations, some from corporations and some from government, but if you want to make a difference, make a contribution yourself. It doesn't matter how big or small you can afford -- make a contribution. There are plenty of reputatble museums with solid plans, plenty of non-profits with ambitious goals out there across the country and across the map. They need your help. Go find one that you are passionate about get behind them. Start early in the year and you can lay out a weekly contribution that will add up by the end of the year. Then watch things happen. I am probably preaching to the choir out there, but it's important to put not only our muscle and minds into these projects, but our wallets as well. Jim Wrinnbo@aol.com |
