Steam locomotive preservation - another form!

Dismembered to run a generator in the Shop. Anyone know what this started out as? Or if it could ever be put back together someday?

Why would you want to reassemble it. Reassembled its in just another steam locomotive. But in its present state it is a one of a kind piece of equipment. A cross between steam locomotive and stationary steam technologies and should be preserved as such.

I don't WANT to reassemble it. What I was thinking is that ONE DAY, the unit may outlive its usefullness, or the Shop building itself could close. THEN, to save it, a reconstruction might be the only way. In the meantime, I completely agree with you, that in its present state is a very unique piece of equipment that hopefully will exist as it is, for many years.

Even more remarkable are a pair of Japanese built 2-8-2s set up intact to run a generator (via their driving wheels as well) in a rice mill in Thailand:
