I got an e-mail from my in-laws near Paulden, Arizona, and they report to me that the Prescott Daily Courier has an article on some plans at the Verde Canyon RR. Apparently the railroad will be shut down for a few days in the hot season of July in order to remove and replace a trestle span on the railroad (the railroad is technically the Arizona Central RR, which serves the big copper smelter near Clarkdale). Apparently the plan is to replace the one girder span on the trestle with a newer pair of girders, salvaged from an overpass in Phoenix being replaced for the light rail project there.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/foxicat/2343656229/ will give you a photo of the original trestle. The center span was the turntable bridge from the original Santa Fe, Phoenix & Pacific (later AT&SF) turntable at Prescott, the original territory capital city.

The original span is being carefully removed and relocated to Clarkdale, where the railroad plans to install it at their still-in-use roundhouse, which serves as their two-track enginehouse, car shop, and garage:

The Big Giveaway is that the railroad no longer serves the smelter... which is pretty much a ruin now...
