Many here probably know what NRPC is - National Railway Passenger Corporation.

I saw in the local Newspaper an article about "Amtrack" and showing passenger trains.

I was wondering how many here actually know what NRPC's marketing name is and what an Amtrack actually is.

NRPC is the National [i]Railroad[/i] Passenger Corporation. The name is Amtrak, not Amtrack. I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking Doug but "Amtrak" is an acronym for "American Travel by Track". The early legislation, which created the corporation, was encumbered with the 1970'sish name of Railpax. And the rest is history.

I think an Amtrack was an amphibious tracked vehicle used during WW II for beach landings. It was probably a cousin to the DUKW that in a civilian role now provides land and water tours of Boston and San Francisco. (readers with more knowledge of odd military vehicles can probably provide better information)

I was wondering if anyone recalled this definition.

Unless Amtrak happens to own one in which case it would be an Amtrak Amtrack.

I once saw an Amtrak pickup truck lettered as an Amtruck, thereby identifying it as a genuine Amtrak Amtruck.

There is a company which does track and signal installation and maintenance called Amtrack. I have seen signs along the CSX Cumberland Sub with that name.

I also believe that they have done work for the Western Maryland Scenic. If I'm not mistaken, they are the firm that did the contentious realignment of the right-of-way and replacing the track west beyond Brush Tunnel a few years ago.
