On Saturday April 26th and Sunday the 27th, 2008, Railroad Museum of New England will have a Track Blitz Weekend at Thomaston Shop and Yard. We will be working on constructing the first of three yard tracks to the west of the shop building. One yard switch is currently under construction, and may be useable by that weekend. On the weekend of March 29-30, 8 locomotives and cars were moved from Old Saybrook, CT to RMNE's Naugatuck Railroad at Waterbury, CT. So, some more room must be made to accomodate this stuff. Now to one of the more important aspects of this weekend: Some of RMNE's top chefs are lined up for cooking duties, and they are already planning the menus. So, participants are assured of some good eating on those days. There may even be a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. The track blitz weekend is being organized and implemented by one of our newer members, Chad Boutet. Chad is a civil engineering student at Northeastern University in Boston, and has already put his considerable talents to work on the shop and yard project, having laid out the yard tracks and switch locations using up-to-date CAD techniques. This will also be a good opportunity to see the Thomaston shop, to see some of the locos and cars RMNE has on-site, and to shake off the winter by getting out and building some railroad. Non-members are welcomed and encouraged; please bring the usual safety gear (gloves, hardhat, work shoes) for being in a railroad environment. Some of RMNE's track machinery will be in use on that weekend also, such as the Portland Terminal 25-ton loco crane, RTW tie crane and track truck TC-40. Alco RS-3 NH 529 may be in use performing switching duties on site. Please contact us if you are going to come out and participate; it will let us plan how many people to feed. Howard, Out of curiosity are there any pictures available on this move or of the rest your collection for that matter? Checking out your website, it seems that you guys have quite the operation going, as far as bringing the general public, and volunteers are concerned, but I wish we could see a little more details on your collection. Old Saybrook is Essex right? What locomotives came from there? I didn't realize that they ever had more than 8 locomotives all together in Essex including the 2 steam locomotives that they operate. Were there more that were hidden some where else on the property? Also how many locomotives does Essex own? I am assuming the 2-6-2 as well as the 4-6-2 came over right? Moving to the Hartford area some time with in the next 2 years is starting to seem more and more like a strong possibility, any hope in setting up a group to restore one of those 2 engines as part of a long term project? Hi Adam: A lot of questions....and that's how we learn!! OK, I will provide some answers for you. Old Saybrook is the location of a four-track storage yard RMNE built between 1988 and 1991. The yard is connected with the Valley Railroad mainline at about VRR MP 1.3. The "Saybrook Yard" was also the place such items as NH RS-3 529, B&M milk car 1920, and MEC gon 17080 were restored. RMNE has been moving equipment out of that location during the last two years; in 2006, we moved (by truck and road dolly) 9 freight cars over to our Naugatuck Railroad at Waterbury. The most recent move was done by rail, a distance of 72 miles via New Haven. Moved on March 29-30 were (in order) New Haven Alco FA-1 #0401, B&M EMC SW1 #1109, CPR G-5c 4-6-2 #1246, Pullman solarium-lounge "Mount Royal", New Haven RPO-Baggage #W-221, New Haven coach #6800, Bangor & Aroostook "State of Maine Products" insulated boxcar #2569, and PRR X-29 REA boxcar #9495. 2-6-2 #103 will be moved by truck, as it weighs about 40 tons "light", and is physically small enough to go on a low trailer. RMNE's long-term goals do include an operating steam locomotive. And I must emphasize "long-term"-- we will not dive into that particular pool this year or even the year after next. We have decided that would not even be considered until we had a shop facility; that particular issue seems to have been resolved. Adam, you are most welcome to visit and see your railroad, our shop and our equipment. And that invitation applies to anyone else out there, too. Howard, I looked at the pictures, pretty neat, I was wondering, where is the collection now sitting? It said Waterbury, is that the yard you can see of I-84? It doesn't look too secure there from what I seem to see. If so how will you guys be securing the collection especially the steam locomotives, so that stuff doesn't go missing? I have been meaning to visit RMNE one of these days, perhaps after I graduate and before I start work maybe. I have always wanted to be involved in a start to finish steam restoration project so we shall see, if life brings me to settle in Hartford in 2yrs maybe I will just have to join RMNE. From what I see online it definitely appears that your museum does quite a good job. Adam |

Adam, The yard you are referring to is the ST trackage at the Waterbury station. For the most part, very little of the track is actually used. Your are correct, if equipment was stored here it probably would disappear!! The equipment is stored our secure Chase Yard. It is actually sitting on the main line at the moment, so this is the driving force behind finishing the yard tracks before the passenger trains in May. Regards, CB |
