I am looking for photos and/or information about the Milwaukee Road's 44-ton Whitcomb built in 1940 and 1941. MILW#/Builder#/Date Built/Notes 1699 60037 10/40 1702 60090 10/41 Renumbered to 993 1703 60091 10/41 Renumbered to 994 1704 60092 10/41 1705 60093 10/41 Renumbered to 995 1706 60094 10/41 Renumbered to 996 1707 60095 10/41 1699 was sold to Purdue. What ever happened to the #1699? Where were these units used and for what service? I haven't been able to locate any photos of these units. Our own Whitcomb 44-tonner #27 at the HVRM has builder #60105 (not a MILW unit). I find this curious since our unit has a build date of 8/41. So many questions, so few answers... |

Bob - I am not sure about this, but here is what MIGHT have happened. Whitcomb built a number of units at one time putting them into stock. As they were sold, the date of the sale was added to the builders plate. When serial number 60105 was sold to the Day & Zimmerman Company as its number 4-44 in August of 1941, that particular month/year was added to the builders plate. I don't know for sure that that is what happened, but it could be one explanation. For instance, I recall reading a David P. Morgan story in TRAINS Magazine many years ago. DPM had always been amazed that the Frankfort & Cincinnati Railroad, a Kentucky short line, had been able to buy a brand new 2-8-0 from Alco in 1933 or 1934, in the extreme depths of the Depression. It was only years later that Morgan learned that the F&C engine was actually built in the 1920's for Cuba, but had never been shipped and was put into stock at the Cooke plant, where it had been built. My memory may have distorted these exact facts a bit, but the essence of them is true. So a difference of only 2 months and 10 or 15 builder numbers at Whitcomb, is not really such a big thing when you think about what Alco did on the little Consolidation sold to the F&C. BTW, I too would like to know what happened to the Whitcomb sold to Purdue University. Harold Lambirth, who worked on the coal crew that handled switching at the university for many years, has mentioned this locomotive to folks at HVRM more than once. The mystery of what happened to it is still not solved. And there's also the case of the two ex-Monon wood sided 2 bay hopper cars that became PU 1 and PU 2 and were also part of the coal operation there at West Lafayette. Ahhh, just a few more of the mysteries that we may never find out about! Les |

Thanks for the info, Les! I really haven't been able to find any information on the coal operations at Purdue. I've met Harold one time and it never dawned on me that they had a Whitcomb at Purdue (and one from the Milwaukee Road). I still can't find any photos of the MILW Whitcombs. I did find photos of MILW's GE and Davenport units: MILW #990 GE 44-tonner: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=354247 MILW #997 Davenport 44-tonner: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=723428 I can almost imagaine that the Whitcomb units were probably very similar to the Davenport pictured above, with probably a different step arrangement. I'm assuming similar to our very own #27. |
