As we speak, the Southern's Pomona roundhouse (Greensboro, NC) is being demolished by D.H Griffin demolition crews.

That leaves only Asheville and Spencer as NC's sole surviving SR roundhouses.

PS: Why is a roundhouse round? So the mechanics don't take a piss in the corners! (Related to me by an 89-year old conductor of the Carolina & North-Western).

What was the roundhouse used for and what is the Asheville one used for?

The Greensboro/Pomona roundhouse for years was leased to a paper or paper recycling company.

The Asheville Roundhouse is still used by Norfolk Southern as a diesel shop, sans turntable. IIRC, only 3 or 4 bays have tracks.
