Extracted from an e-mail:
The Walkersville Southern RR in Walkersville, MD will be hosting its Annual Opening Day Event on Saturday May 3rd, kicking off our 2008 operating season.

The WSRR operates Saturdays May through October and Sundays May-June and September-October in addition to many trains ran for special occasions. Trains depart from the historic pre-1900 Pennsylvania RR station for an eight mile round trip south along the former PRR Frederick Secondary. The route passes an 1872 lime kiln, Barricks Farm, and over the Monocacy River Bridge. In 1972 Hurricane Agnes washed this bridge out and as a result Penn Central abandoned the line. In 1996 the bridge was rebuilt and excursion trains continue to the end of the line at Route 26. Beyond Route 26 we are separated from the remaining two miles of trackage into downtown Frederick, MD.

On Opening Day we will be operating our three trains at 11:00AM, 1:00PM, and 3:00PM. Tickets are $9.00 adults, $5.00 children, and $8.00 seniors and the tickets are good all day if you want to ride again. In addition to the train rides, several trackcars will be on hand giving rides following the excursion trains south and leading them back north. The museum located in the old ice house will be open for touring and there will be lunch items for sale.

Our newest locomotive will also be ready for inspection, ex-Army 7707, a 20-Ton Davenport affectionately numbered #3. The locomotive needs a substantial amount of work for a volunteered organization and donations through the Chesapeake Railway Association are welcomely pursued. In addition to #3, the railroads first locomotive Plymouth #1 will be on display next to the museum. #101, ex-Army 7954, a 40-Ton EMD on lease from the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum will likely power the day's trains, leaving #3's big brother, 25-Ton Davenport #2 from the Port of Richmond on display.

Former RF&P caboose 923 is in the final stages of its restoration and will be our regular caboose later this season. The car has been beautifully repainted in an "accurate, but red" RF&P livery. You can view the restoration progress on our largest piece of equipment at the railroad, former New Haven parlor car "Meadow Lark". Both of these cars, as well as future repairs on Wabash caboose 2827, are all funded by donations to the Chesapeake Railway Association and volunteer labor.

Directions to Walkersville can be found at our website: http://wsrr.org/direct.htm More information on the Chesapeake Railway Association can be found at http://www.chessierail.org/ and if you have any questions about the event or Walkersville Southern, I would be happy to answer them at NandW1218@msn.com
