I decided to go ahead and post a scan I made of a photo taken back in 1996 of the Morehead & North Fork headquarters/station in Kentucky. I've always held an affinity towards the M&NF since I was a kid - my great grandmother was friends with one of the engineers on this railroad and often spoke about her cab ride experiences. I can't find it right now, but several years ago a picture of the M&NF headquarters was featured along with a one page article in Trains magazine. This is what it looked like when we visited in 1996: http://www.apheus.com/railroads/M&NF_station.jpg Also, any updates on the status of the 0-6-0 sitting in Clearfield? |

Mr. Barcus, The 0-6-0 is still in Clearfield and is on private property locked up in a building. All of her jewelry has been removed and is stored safely. The state of Kentucky is putting a new bridge in to replace the current one on US 519. Due to this construction, the rails were pulled to the white storage building. All of the mainline was pulled up in 2001 up Morgan Fork and into West Morehead. There is a little trackage left in the yard but even the scale house track was removed in 2001. The new road will come right down most of the right of way from Clack Mountain to the new bridge at Triplett Creek. At one time, this could have been a close equivilant to the EBT or Nevada Northern in that the original stuctures were still in place. Unfortunatly, the office is in worse shape now and one whole side has fallen in. Due to my past involvement, it has been very hard for me to see all of this "Progress" but I have nothing to do with the current situation since I moved my machine shop out of the engine house in 1996. Currently, I am writing a history book on the railroad and am also building a 1 1/2" railroad at home. A couple of items in particular I am modeling is M&NF #9 and the Edwards Rail Car "The Blue Goose" which is still in operation at the Califorinia Western Railroad. Take care, JD Johnson, Morehead and North Fork Railroad Historian |

JD - Thanks for the terrific update. Sad that M&NF #12 isn't going to be running again (we have a nice little 10 mile piece of railroad in Indiana where we could make the 0-6-0 feel right at home). But I am glad to know that she is apparently still safe. I look forward to your book on the M&NF. And seeing photos of your 1-1/2" scale M&NF equipment. Les |
