Please forgive if these are "dumb" questions, but I am looking for general info in this topic What is (and was) the way(s) that one railroad negotiated with another to be allowed to run over thier line - pay a per train "toll" or monthly charge? Does the Fed. Gov't require this to happen in some way? |

One type of arrangement involves paying a designated amount per car per mile. |

At one time, the B&O paid the P&LE 1/2 of what it saved by not using its own line through Pittsburgh, Pa. The agreement was later revised to a more traditional payment system. |

What is (and was) the way(s) that one railroad negotiated with another to be allowed to run over their line - pay a per train "toll" or monthly charge? Does the Fed. Gov't require this to happen in some way? The ICC and its successor, the STB, could mandate the granting of trackage rights upon petition of one carrier against another and the STB still requires the filing of agreements with it. Remuneration varies. Some assess a per car charge, others a per train movement charge, still others a share of maintenance expenses based on either a percentage or on tons-miles moved by each party, A few are on annual lease payments, but that is mainly when the owning road thinks the leasing road will not generate enough revenue based on traffic. I personally had to deliver a company check to the L&N to permit the Chicago & Indiana to use the Calumet River bridge to access the IHB in Calumet City in 1979. |
