The newspaper article is correct; the Western railway Museum that is preserving lots of San Francisco equipment is not going to take any of these loosers. That is to say that that a Light Rail Vehicle may not go into the collection some day. For example. the Sacramento RT has some of their cars due to retire and there are lots of spare parts to keep a car running. The Bredas are wonderful by the way, I wish that I can ride one to work rather than a Dismal bus. There should be additional news about SF street cars soon! TM ted_miles@NPS.gov |

At least one should be cast into a large cube of plexiglas and placed suchthat it will be a reminder to the politicos. Getting lightrail established is hard enough without scenerios like that ... geeze they even got me saying light rail, I don't even like light beer! ...STREETCARS ... how archaic! lamontdc@adelphia.net |

Gosh, I sure hope you don't think a museum should accept something into its collection simply because it is available and within its field of collecting. Ability to care for the collection should be part of the decision making process. Also part of the decision making process should be the value of the artifact to serving the mission statement. Also wheather the artifact is preserved eleswhere, etc. To reject a railroad artifact because it cannot be operated or would be difficult to keep operating seems to point to wanting to operate and not preserve. To reject a railroad artifact because it replaced the cars or engines that the leaders of a museum think are significant seems to point to a limited view of history and technology. The author went through a list of problems with the car, stating stuff like the trucks were prone to derailments and the controllers burned out frequently and the doors didn't close and the frame was weak. (I'm going from memory, these may not be accurate) In any case, once I got done reading the article my first thought was "Well what DID work on these lemons?!?"
