The movie "Hello Dolly" was on our local PBS station tonight. Can someone refresh my memory on what was filmed where as far as the railroad scenes. The "New York Central" locomotive is obviously PRR 1223. What are the cars with it in the opening scenes? They look like steel cars. What is the terminal posing as New York? It kind of looks like Reading Terminal in Philadelphia or perhaps Dearborn? Did they actually use the 1223 on the Hudson Line? And finally what station was used for "Yonkers"?

Funny, its on our station too tonight and I was wondering those same questions. Yes, that's 1223 and it was filmed along the Hudson River. The rest, I don't know!

The internet movie database says Garrison, NY was used to portray the station at Yonkers, and the "train scene" was filmed in Lancaster County, PA. I'm not familiar with the movie, so maybe if you check the other filming locations listed....it may help piece it together:

I know all about it! I just can't remember it!!! HA HA! Actually, somewhere around here, I know I read it before; I think Linn Moedinger posted it but I will not say for sure. There is quite an interesting story about the engine running on the Hudson, like I said, SOMEWHERE around here and how they got the engine there, problems w/ speed restrictions and something about washing mud off a car...
If not Linn, maybe Kelly...Someone at Strasburg knows more than me...Sorry!

I FOUND IT!! I knew I'm not crazy! Just do a search for 1223 and click on the post for 7002 and 1223. You will find a post there by Linn himself regarding the Hello Dolly "run" and some other news about why it cannot be possible to run excursions around Strasburg again.

Not a question you asked, but the parade scene was filmed at the 20th Century-Fox studio near the Century City part of Los Angeles. The building fronts were created on the end of studio buildings and remained up for years and could be seen from the street (Pico Blvd.). I seem to recall a write-up about making the movie in a magazine like "Life" or "Look." It's been years since I've been in that part of Los Angeles.

Here are some links to some photos of the studio "Hello, Dolly" sets:

The horse cars were real Los Angeles cars from a private collection. The elevated train in the background was a locomotive and car from the Hawaii Railway on the "Big Island" of Hawaii; also from the same private collection.

Hello Dolly was filmed right about the time I came on the payroll at Strasburg. I remember one of my jobs was to wash the fake dirt off the sides of the cars. This was applied by 20th Century Fox because the cars looked too shiny.

Huber Leath was CMO at that time, and he went with the train. It was filmed along the Hudson at Garrison. Huber got to run on the NYC main for, I believe about three weeks. He told me that the fastest he went was 67 mph. They had a mechanical problem - I think it was a lead truck brass burned up - and the closest NYC shop got it fixed pretty quickly. This was not a big issue then - even on the NYC main.

I was a kid at the time and remember seeing it
from across the river up nearly to the Breaknect
tunnel. Amazing thing for me was that the
steam whistle wasnt all that of a big deal
as the Dayliner Alexander Hamilton passed
by daily, Two years to go as the nation's
last steam sidewheeler.
