I understand that the several EMD "visible" F-units of the 1940s, that were built for public display with removable side panels, interior lighting, and all the machinery and piping painted to match the color piping diagrams in the EMD operators manual, are one of the topics covered in an F-unit article published in the July 2008 issue of Railfan & Railroad Magazine.

Would you happen to mean models (like the one on display in the B&O Museum--or is that an E8?), or full-sized locos?

Sandy, these were not models, they were real F-units that were specially modified for open-sided public viewing, with all the features described above. They were briefly mentioned in one of the author's previous articles. I understand this article will have a more detailed discussion of these locomotives and how they were displayed and used.

I am just mentioning this in the event that it might be of interest to those planning future exhibits, to see how well EMD was able to do this sixty years ago. Their effort apparently was successful.

There is a photo of one of these units, a F7B, on display in Waverly, NY, on the Erie, in the book "Trackside around Sayre-Towanda-Waverly with Lloyd Hall"..a Morningside book.

quotes below are snippets of photo captions from the book:

Quote:
A special train, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Erie reaching Dunkirk on Lake Erie is moving into Waverly on July 29, 1951.

Quote:
The display train had a B-unit in painted in EMD demonstrator colors behind the lead F3.

Quote:
Following the (Erie) 800D is an EMD F7B unit with drop side panels. The unit is painted in EMD demonstrator colors and features a steam generator. The policeman is making sure people dont dawdle on the mainline tracks..

The display train has an Erie F3A, in Erie Black and Yellow, then the EMD demonstrator F7B, then some passenger cars, and flatcar with an army tank.

The one photo of the F7B, the EMD demonstrator unit in EMD red & white paint, is shown with its side panels removed, panels sitting on the ground leaning up against the engine, and Waverly citizens are walking along the inside of the unit along the walkways, between the locos innards and the panel-less framework of the engine.

No lettering of any kind is visable on the B-unit, no EMD lettering or a road number..and the text does not identify the unit's number.
