Since I started steamlocomotive.info I've developed a kind of growing fondness for the odder locomotives that existed, were steam powered and occassionally got preserved. Among them are a group of British locomotives whose wheel arrangement is described in the subject of this post. Graham Williams, a frequent contributor to steamlocomotive.info provided the image below:

The boiler is indeed vertical and contained within the area just forward of the cab wall, the narrow barrel where a boiler would be expected is a tank for the locomotive's water, and I'm assuming the mechanism that drives the thing is in the area where a smokebox would traditionally be.

Does anybody have a source of more information about these little Sentinel built critters?

Regards,
Doug

Looks kind of like a class Y-1. Wikipedia has quite a bit of info on these strange little critters.

Post subject:  Sentinel Locomotives

Some time ago I did a bit of online research re the Sentinel Waggon Works. The company built a large number of switchers, a few larger road engines, numerous steam-powered railcars and road trucks. One of their largest used a watertube boiler operating at 550 PSI. It had two three-axle trucks with an individual steam motor driving each axle. A remarkably inovative locomotive for the 1930's.
