Great shot of Lima built USA S-160 #5197 in Great Britain:

Built for China in 1945 where she was classified as a KD6. Saved from scrap and brought to England in 1995. Anybody have her Lima serial number?

5197 is Lima works no. 8856. Preserved on the Churnet Valley Railway in Staffordshire, England.

Note in the comments below the photo a question about the air pumps now missing from the smokebox front. I will wager that whatever is on the tender deck in the rear frame is some device to give the loco necessary air pressure and vacuum (?) for the vintage British braking systems.

My copy of "Allied Military Locomotives of World War II" is not handy, but tought that the locomotive brakes on S-160s were steam brakes.

I don't know much about how vaccum brakes work, but don't you just need something called a "vaccum ejector" to create the vaccum?

The S-160s had a single air brake pump mounted on the front of the smokebox; it resulted in an off-set smokebox door.

It does look like someone removed the steam driven air compressor; and maybe installed a gas powered compressor instead?

Is that a photo of one of the S-160s that went to the Alaska Railroad? I remember reading that very few S-160s were brought back from Europe after the war, and one of those went to the ARR.

Actually, quite a few S-160's ended up working for the Alaska Railroad. I am not sure just how many, but perhaps someone knows. A few of them even got center mounted headlights, including the one in the photograph that James posted above. This is one of only two surviving ARR S-160's, but I don't know its road number.

I found this picture on the web; but I think it is #556 (ex-U.S. Army #2627), on display in Delaney Park strip, 9th Ave. & E St., Anchorage, AK.
