Those air pump bracket shims may have been designed that way to lend extra support to the pumps. That design makes sense as the pumps are heavy and could use a bit more vertical support. Just imagine the forces trying to pull those brackets off the boiler everytime the loco hits a rough spot in the track.

This is what we want to see! Doing it correctly, too! Please keep us informed as progress is made. Nice job, and pats on the back to all those involved.
