I wondered what the connection is between Salone and Railroaders' Memorial Museum. I found it in a on-line version of a print article from the Altoona Mirror newspaper: Quote: Salone Management Group, owned by Salone, has a contract to operate the museum.

The really relevant issue is that the ARRM unceremoniously dumped Scott Csessna to hire this individual, on the basis that his business acumen was going to lead them to salvation. I don't know anything about Mr. salano, other than what's written. I know he's unable to avoid a reorganization for his own business, so his skills aren't bulletproof. It may not be fair, but ARRM is taking a hit for its employee's business failings. Perhaps the ARRM board needs to consider a replacement-for itself. |

I don't want to name call. I don't know any of the players other than what has been in the local and Pittsburgh papers. That being said, can Altoona support a museum of the size and financial requirements of the Railroaders Museum? Aside from the casual visitor passing through the area and going to Horseshoe Curve is there a supply of tourists? Altoona would seem to me to be a little too far to be a day trip location. I do know that Altoona was almost the site chosen for the RR Museum of PA. I know it's late in the game but would it make any sense to have the state take over this museum and make it a satellite location of the Museum in Strasburg? |

If the main collection was in Altoona, would the attendance be sufficient to make a go of it? I think not. These things needs people and they need location. Ill forget the need for money. A tough road is ahead. |

Absolutely not! I stated facts. Fact: Scott Cessna was unceremoniously dumped. The circumstances of his departure were at best poorly handled and at worst machiavellian maneuvering. Fact: The individual chosen to replace him was brought on because it was presumed that his superior business acumen was transferrable, even though running a for-profit retail establishment is completely different territory than a non-profit. Fact: Now said individual is involved in a Chapter 11 filing-which is not an indicator of superior business acumen. Fact: There's a public question about how he contracted for services-as an officer of a business or as an individual. Fac: The dispute has become public and he has been identified with the ARRM, and its not something that's beneficial. Fact: The ARRM is still unable to assess and fund their signature project. Indeed, their project still needs to be physically relocated. Any first year business student would suspect that the Board is not able to provide effective direction and that a change might be needed at the top. That's not name calling or even close. The direction of an organization lies with its board and they bear responsibility for the current state of affairs. |

The owner could not understand that in order to apply for grants and other state or federal money the ownership issue has to be addressed and that one group could not apply for the money while the other still had control. It might very well make sense to have PHMC (PA Historic and Museum COmmission) involvement in Altoona. However, as it stands, the Commonwealth is withholding RCAP (Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program) moneys for the K-4. You also have to remember that the state is involved in a heated battle of leasing the turnpike to raise money. It will not happen. Not enough votes in Blair County and you can be sure the gov would love to dislodge Mr. Geist. |

Wow --- this is a first, and I do have to say I am pleased that somebody out there realizes that, while managing a non-profit in a business like and fiscally prudent fashion is always paramount, that the skills are NOT entirely the same. Wish more understood the difference, frankly. |

Seems to me that based on the unfortunate facts at issue that Mr. Cessna's sacking was more than well justified on the clear basis of at best, misjudgement in the way the 1361 project was micro-managed from Altoona, often at odds with what the steam pro's directly involved wanted to do. I can speak from personal knowledge in that I attempted to lend a helping hand in 2003 by assembling a small team of nationally respected steam restoration pro's to help them get on the right track, and witnessed this mis-management first hand. I guess you could argue that his fireing could/should have been shrouded in the normal corporate camoflouge ( "left to persue other interests, etc.") but that doesn't change the facts at issue. It certainly is unfortunate that the entity brought on board to get things moving in the right direction is now embroiled in a publically embarrasing situation. Reminds me of the old saying--"the gang that couldn't shoot straight". One can only hope that the ARRMM BOD ( I assume there is still a functioning BOD ??) will take the necessary corrective actions and find another solution. As superheater mentions, the guy to feel sorry for is Rep. Rick Geist who put his name on the line in the Pa. legislature to raise all the funding for this ill fated project and who is now hanging out there as a juicy target for his political enemies. If for no other reason than Mr.Geists well being let's hope that by some miracle this gets resolved!! In the interim I guess the 1361 sits in Scranton in pieces, awaiting the call to go home???
