Here's a photo of Duluth & Northeastern 2-8-0 #14 taken in March of 1958 at Cloquet, Minnesota: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-d/dne-s14dsa.jpg One of two similar Consolidations (number 16 was the other), this one bounced around a bit since being sold by the D&NE. I recall it being in South Dakota and also Kansas, but have lost track of it. Anyone know where it is today, and in what condition? Thanks. Les |

SteamLocomotive.com: "This is a sister to D&NE locomotive #16. This photo appeared in a 1962 Minneapolis area paper. The caption stated that this locomotive, number 14, was towed into Worthington, MN enroute to Hill City, SD where it would be converted to burn oil and used by the Black Hills Central Railroad. I am assuming that #14 was stored in Cloquet before it made its journey to Hill City, SD. As it turned out, #14's wheelbase was too long for the curves on the Black Hills Central. #14 was not restored or converted to burn oil.It was later sold to the Dodge City, Ford & Bucklin Railroad in Ford, KS.In 1999 #14 was up for sale. It was reportedly in excellent condition. In 2000,it was seen heading west on a flatcar on its way to the Fillmore & Western Railway." Put Alco domes on this consolidation and it would look a lot like a Copper Range #29. The Copper Range #29 had a stack like this one in the early days before getting the stubby thing it has now. Cheers, John. |

I guess I was remiss in not mentioning that sister engine #16 is on display in a park in Cloquet, MN. Most of the later day steam roster of the D&NE was preserved. Les |

D&NE 14 is undergoing restoration by a group called the California Locomotive Preserve for service on the Fillmore & Western. More info and photos on the group's website, http://www.caloco.org/. The site went for couple years with no updates, but there have been several updates posted in the last few months, with visible progress on the locomotive's restoration. |

I remember the newspaper article, talk about the last runs of steam, they were still running in 1962. Mike |
