Post subject:  CA&E Rwy #309 Dedication Ceremonies, A brief report

Saturday, July 5, 2008 was the date for the formal rededication ceremonies of Chicago Aurora & Elgin Rwy interurban car #309 at the Illinois Rwy Museum, in Union, Ill.

The project, headed up by Randall Hicks and a great team of volunteers, including son Frank (a frequent RYPN contributor) joined sister car #308 (308 restoration work detailed by Frank Hicks in an RYPN Brief 3/12/2006)
after dedication ceremonies for several mainline trips.

Dedication ceremonies started noonish,, with car 309 parked in the center door of Barn 4 (temporarily replacing the normal resident of that spot, Sand Springs #68, a project headed up by yet another frequent RYPN contributor Bob Kutella) Posed under the large CA&E sign which used to hang on the Wheaton station, the car was the perfect podium for a series of short remarks by IRM president Ray Pieschuk, IRM General Manager Nick Kallas, and finally Project Manager Randall Hicks.

A banner was strung across the barn doors, Motorman Hicks took a point or two of power, and the 309 motored effortlessly out of the barn and literally sparkled as the brilliant red and blue paint scheme took on the sun's rays. While the #309 was coupled up to the 308, cake and refreshments were served, then it was off to the mainline for a series of trips.

A really nice day in the sun for the Hicks family and their friends and team of volunteers. As Randall noted at one point, he has some 30+ years invested in all this, a couple days in the limelight is a pretty bad ratio, but hopefully math doesn't factor in on those days. Congratulations and thanks all around to the entire IRM family for yet another successful project.
