| Post subject: | Crowfoot? Working over the Axles on the 905........crowfoot? |
Our group in Duncan, OK is beginning the task of working over the axles on the 905 (4-6-2 Rock Island) in preparation for a move. Per Bob Yarger's suggestions, we began on one of the Tender journal boxes. His suggestion was to use a crowsfoot to stop the truck from rising when the box was jacked up. Well, we don't have a crowsfoot or know what it looks like or an alternative procedure. I'm asking for your help on this subject. When jacking up the journal box, we lacked about 1/8 inch in being high enough to remove the wedge sitting on top of the brass. The truck began to rise. We thought we'd be smart and chain the axles to the track. We found then that we were jacking up the track and the truck. According to Yarger's wordage, the jack sits on the crowfoot. Evidently it basically connects to the jack to the truck and when jacking the journal box you are also pushing down on the truck. Any ideas or suggestions? Mike Stuckert, Save the 905, Inc. |

I appreciate the quick reply. and understand all but the "on top of the lower wheel rim". About 2 1/2 inches up from where the bottom of the wheel sits on the rail is an inside rim or inside cut that goes inwards 2 maybe 3 inches. Is that what the "top of the lower wheel rim"? If so, ours is sloped upwards as it goes inwards until it becomes the vertical part of the wheel between the rim and the hub. Wouldn't the crowfoot tend to kick outward when we begin jacking, or would all the forces tend to keep everything in place. If the forces tend to keep everything in place, Do I need to have the lip of the crowsfoot that goes over that rim curved to match that inside slope. I do have a photo I can send. Thanks again for your answer to our problem. Mike Stuckert |

Jeff, I think I can guess your answer. Just build the crowfoot 5 inches wide and straight and let the edges cut into the curvature of the inside rim. The downward pressure of the bottom of the jack will probably be more than enough to hold the wheel down that extra 1/8 inch we need. If anything gets me it will be the tie spacing. They put our display loco in place and only used every 2nd tie and the rear journal box falls squarely in between 2 ties. I'll try to get some good metal plating to use as the base between the two ties. Last Saturday we were bending a 4 x 6 spanning the two ties. And that was on top of a 2 x 6. mike |

Mike....did you first remove all the packing, etc that might prevent the axle from dropping down to its lowest position in the box? dave |
