CTI has available for sale a single-truck, double-ended car that
originally ran in Greece. The town of Piraeus, Greece, the port city
of Athens, ordered a number of streetcars that were built by the
United Electric Car Company of Preston, England, for Siemens
Electrical Equipment, in 1914. Number 60 operated in Piraeus until
1960, when Piraeus town transit ceased operations. The car was then
converted into a track maintenance car for the interurban line that
ran from Piraeus to Athens. The end platforms were shortened and
enclosed, and the bench seats were removed. In 1977, the Athens Metro
Subway System bought Number 60 and used it for maintenance work until
the early 1980s.

The car was cosmetically restored in 1989 In addition to the
cosmetic restoration, the following has been done:

Both motors dipped and baked, and one motor rewound.
Controllers rebuilt
All asbestos removed
Complete rewire
New brake shoes
New lightning arrester

With our current situation, CTI cannot operate this car and needs to

Its sister car is saved for now, unoperable, stored in southern Illinois in the St. Louis metro area. At least one of these cars appeared in the movie, Never on A Sunday, with Sophia Loren, while still in Greece.

This is a really cool little Victorian gem of a car - single truck on high spoked wheels, lots of brass and finished woodwork, art glass in the clerestory sash. It is fitted out with bench seats running along the sides. This car was a travelling display back in the late 1980's when I was working on restoring car #85 - it is so small it easily trailered wherever it could be used for fundraising purposes to support the larger project. NOT a revenue producer based on seats in butts, however - insufficient butt space. Wes, couldn't you guys use an ancient Greek around your place?

I do not have any direct involvement with this project, but it seems to me that the National Capital trolley museum has a number of cars from Europe in their collection.

Since they lost several cars to a car house fire a few years ago, maybe they would be interested in this car. Is it standard gauge?
