Sometime this past week, before Sat. afternoon the large square enamel sign WP logos on the tender of WP 164 in Hewitt Park, Oroville, CA were stolen, BOTH SIDES!
If you see any large, about 4 foot square, logo signs for sale, please let me know by email or phone (530)-534-3676. Here is a close-up picture of one of them. Notice the bullet chip in the lower left corner, that should be a good identifying mark!
Now to find a handy tree to hang the prep's. . .
Steamcerely,

Geez. Who the heck would do such a thing, unless they had some knowledge of what they were worth. One stupid jerk out there screws it up for the rest of us again. Well, time to start checking ebay.....

Train shows as well as hobby magazine classifieds are more possible ways of moving these items. Selling stollen items, no matter what they are is still a crime. People are all to eager to get their hands on the "real thing" when they think they see it. Or, they may just sit in a basement until the end of time. The more eyes looking, the better chance of having them returned.

There is a GATS show this weekend in Sacramento, I am working it, and you can bet my eyes will be peeled, as well as carrying this picture with me. Maybe I'll even put up a WANTED poster.

I don't want to throw cold water on any glimmer of hope, but, those that stole the signs probably did so with no immeadiate intensions of selling them. My guess is that they are now displayed in somebodies garage or basement. The really sad thing is when the guilty party dies the signs will be sold or even destroyed because the kids don't know the value or more importantly the history.

I've seen it before.

Good Luck on retrevial.

Yes, but maybe if we make 'em too hot, who will they show them to?? The word will get around, if we spread it. Anyone here have a friend who "suddenly" has added a neat piece of WP on their wall?

Yes, that's true, but we're not dealing with normal people.

I took the liberty of posting your message and the photo on Trainorders.com. Lets see if we can stop the thieves!

RE: Keep on the Lookout Please
DocJones: Make sure you file a report with the police in the jurisdiction where the engine lives which I assume is Oroville. You'll have to verify who owns the engine; that might be the City of Oroville or whatever group has title to it. In that way an investigation can be started. It looks like the locomotive was in a locked enclosure which makes the crime a burglary which is a felony. That will make it more important and interesting to the investigating agency. As you get leads from wherever you can feed them to the investigating officer and hopefully an arrest and conviction will come out of this deed. If the idiot(s) who stole the signs knows they are facing four years in state prison or whoever is stupid enough to buy or offer to sell the signs at a show faces a charge of receiving stolen property it might cause the signs to reappear. Don't forget to have someone on the lookout at Winterail for the signs. That's why you want the badge and gun guys involved. You don't want to get into a citizen's arrest scene unless you have to. They could put a Stockton PD officer undercover at Winterail to pinch whoever has the signs for sale. Apprehending crooks shouldn't be your job and there are any number of us who will be there to cheer (and jeer) when the idiot is taken away. Hope this helps.
Have fun, be safe

You might also try looking around the area for some bubba with a hole in his garage about the size of his 4x4 who figured this would be nice free sheet metal to keep out the weather. Hey, anything's possible.I deal with people like this every weekend at the flea market and that's exactly how they think. They'd steal the tin off grandma's roof to keep their precious truck safe.

Just kidding ;>I)

Everyone needs to not only be watching, but also listening as well. Sometimes theives will brag about a job they did in some way, not knowing that somebody "in the know" is within the audible range.

> Hey, I used to drive a truck..... One of things we have noticed (speaking of truck drivers) is that the "in thing" is to have a locomotive horn on a rig. This might have caused an increase in the number of horns that have floated away from museums, or supplied a demand for devious folks to fill! I have been "saluted" several times by drivers going over the rt18 crossing in Wellington. I keep my horns at home and only bolt them on when necessary.
