Among other markings on the side of Strasburg 7312's cab is "30%." I think this was related to valve timing in a discussion here a while back, but I can't find the thread. If it's valve timing, what, exactly does that mean? If not, what is the meaning? Thanks

Canadian National used % as a shorthand to indicate a steam locomotive's tractive effort.

30% = 30,000 pounds tractive effort.

I hope this helps!

30% x 1000lbs. tractive effort=30,000lbs.

#89 has 26% on the side of the cab. I think it means that in CN paint with the centered headlight, the engine looks 26% as good as it did in its old Strasburg scheme.

I'd say that's about right...

It's been down-rated? 35% to 30%?
