Post subject: Richmond, Ca wigwags *PIC*
PostPosted: Thu Jan 24, 2002 3:10 pm

There is a move right now in Point Richmond, Ca. to save the 2 wigwags that are at the entrance to this historic district. Many of the merchants have banded together and will be at the next city council meeting on Tuesday January 29th. This has become more than just a railfan issue as they are seriously concerned that the installation of 3 new cantilever signals will have a negative impact on the historic nature of their town. Trains creep across this crossing at about 5 MPH as this track is used only for switching.

They are also planning a rally at the crossing at 12:30 PM this Monday, January 28th. This is were we really need LOTS of support. I'm sure that the Contra Costa Times will be out there (they've been in contact with me about this). I'm hoping that other media will be as well. Some signs will be available; however, participants are asked to bring their own placards if possible.

The meeting place will be in the general vicinity of the Wig Wags and the historic Richmond Plunge near the intersections of Cutting Blvd, Garrard Blvd and Richmond Avenue.

This is going to be a tough battle as the crossing upgrade is already in progress. These things are very hard to fight as the railroads usually prevail when it come to things like this.

If nothing else, it will be a hell of a send-off for the last 2 wigwags that are still serving a public crossing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
