Probably at Santa Maria, long before they ever heard of the Neverland Ranch: http://cgi.ebay.com/3672ND-RAILROAD-PHO ... otohosting |

The 21 is sitting in front of the blacksmith shop. The foundation for the water tower was still in place a few years ago. For those of you who may not know, the SMVRR is currently in the process of dismantling the remaining buildings including the blacksmith shop, engine house and back shops etc. Most of the heavy machine equipment is now gone and last week when I was there, the loading of the parts rooms into bins for storage was taking place. They will be relocating to a different area along the line as the commercial property in downtown SM is very valuable and was not included in the recent sale of the railroad. |

I think this question may have surfaced a while back, but I do not remember where or what the answer was. How is the firebox/boiler work coming along? The web sight hasn't been modified or added too since 5/2006 with a small report on the tender tank needing replacement. I have always thought this was a sweet locomotive and am hoping for a successful boiler rebuild, they were going gang busters on it back in the early 2000-2003 era, so where is this at now? I remember more photos of the firebox work, but don't know where that was or is anymore. Sorry if this question is redundant, but anybody got more recent news on this classy engine? Thanks, John. |

Not sure of the work, but the cab and tender were relocated since my last visit in '03. As far as progress goes, they were putting more work into it last Summer but it still seems far from running. |

Work continues on #21, albeit slowly. The plans for next weekend are to paint the original oil tank, and paint the new water tank for the tender. The tender frame is already painted. Following the paint job is reassembly. The trucks have been rebuilt. The wood deck for the tender is on hand, and should be installed in the next month or so. The goal is to have the tender completed, and on the tracks this fall. I'll try to get some pictures posted when the tender is complete. Work on the engine will pick up again when the tender is finished. Most of the firebox work is done. The plan is to bring the frame under the boiler this winter, and start reassembly. Things would be moving faster if we had more volunteers and more money. A healthy dose of either would get #21 on the tracks a lot faster. As it is, our small crew of dedicated volunteers keep working suprisingly hard, and are starting to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. We've been trying not to say when #21 will be operating again, especially since we been saying in just a couple of years for almost 15 years. I hope it will be on the tracks soon, but if not I remain confident that it will be on the tracks someday, in better than new condition. Thank you for the replies. Glad too hear the work continues even if slowly. Couple more questions if you don't mind. Is the plans to test the boiler on the ground {hydro and test fire} or on the frame? I can't remember, were there any barrel repairs needed? I think the SMV #21 is one of the nicest looking mikes around, and with the low weight, a real handy size to run with. Best to all on this project. Cheers, John. |
