Most readers know about this one, but a nice photo. Sectioned MN class Ellerman Lines at the National Railway Museum at York. There are more than 30 Bullied 4-6-2s extant, with several operable, so cutting it up is not the crime one might imagine.

There is a sectioned GE U28C at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. The work was done by the UP, which donated it, and it was used as for instruction of mechanics until it became too out of date for that purpose. It is also the only surviving example of the U28 model. Its hoods are gone and the prime mover has parts removed to allow its inside to be seen. The air compressor is also sectioned at several points. It is kept under the large trainshed where visitors can walk up to it on a high level platform and its parts are labeled. Wallking tours of the museum normally include using it for an explanation of how a diesel works.

Instructive, yes. The only thing lost is the locomotive itself.

I've seen the exhibit and it is very well done, still, amongst steamers that might have been rebuilt and operated, she it entirely lost.

I'm with you. When I saw it, I felt nauseated. I know there are other Merchant Navy Pacifics out there, but there is a better way to educate the public without mutiliating a locomotive.

The B&O Museum has a brass cutaway of P-7 4-6-2 #5300 the President Washington, sitting right beside the prototype. The public can learn, and no locomotives get harmed in the process.

Electro-Motive built several "visible" F-units in the late 1940s that had removable side panels and could be used as displays at trade shows or for training purposes. They were fitted with 567 engines that had glass handhole covers, mirrors in the engine top deck covers, and cutaway pumps and roots blowers. The piping systems and tanks on the locomotive were painted in colors to match the description plates in the locomotive operators manuals, and all the major components were given description stencils. The interior of the engine and the interior of the locomotive were fitted with spotlights for nightime display, and they were accompanied by a portable set of ramps that allowed visitors to walk along the outside, high enough to easily view all the machinery. They sent these around the country to various events for a while and then brought them back into the plant, fitted them with functional engines, and sold them to customers. The story of these locomotives and a picture of one of the visible F-units are in the July 2008 issue of Railfan & Railroad magazine. EMD also built a similarly "visible" GP35 for the New York World's Fair that was converted back for service after the event was over.

I disagree. There are lots of Merchant Navies. It would have been
scrap otherwise. I only wish they had sectioned a chain drive
engine to show the odd arrangement the engine was originally
built with.
