Are there any developments on the B&O Museum's planned "Fair of the Iron Horse" slated for 2003? Just curious! http://rrmuseumpa.org |

You can read this one of two ways: They are either keeping quiet until all the pieces are in place to make a grand and spectacular announcement; OR they are playing down the talk to save future embarrassment. I would strongly suspect by now that enough pieces should be in place that you would/should hear something from places soliciting donations to subsidize transport or completion of restoration--just as random examples, a push to complete PRR 1361 at Steamtown, or Wilmington & Western 4-4-0 98 just up the main line from Baltimore, or pressure on the Strasburg to send down their Ma & Pa coach and freight cars. In addition, one might suspect that CSX, which had the Howard Street Tunnel fire back in July, might be trying to be a better neighbor by cooperating with the city and B&O Museum--as SP did with 4449 after their derailment in California. Alas, the tunnel fire is but a dim memory already among Baltimore residents. As for a joint NRHS/R&LHS convention about the same time, I can confirm that the event is still scheduled, but the Baltimore Chapter NRHS, chock full of members that are also B&O Museum volunteers that would be needed at any Rail Fair, has passed on actually hosting the convention. The Washington D.C. Chapter is now in charge. Although they have a great deal of experience in dealing with railroads (they run the Pullman "Dover Harbor"), I am one of several Baltimore non-B&O members that have offered their services to the Washington Chapter and have yet to hear back from them. In short: It ain't looking good. lner4472@bcpl.net |

How about the streetcar museum and your very young Porter 0-4-0? Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

> How about the streetcar museum and your very > young Porter 0-4-0? Streetcars aren't on the B&O Museum's radar at all. Things are going great there, however--including planning for a serious expansion, once certain elements fall into place. St. Elizabeth's Hospital 4, the 0-4-0T you refer to, has been certified for service (I am told) and will probably officially debut at the "All Aboard" open house events which I think are the last weekend in April. (Ironically, the last train ran on the D.C. branch running to the former St. E's a few weeks ago.) I cornered a few B&O Museum folks at the model train show in Timonium, Md. today. The general consensus is that the Museum HAS some BIG news coming up, but is holding for a big announcement once enough is in place. They say they expect some big announcement around the annual Founders' Day banquet. Meanwhile, yet another source says CSX has shown NO willingness to cooperate as of yet, insofar as excursions, etc. And I must say, a lot of the reports I'm hearing from the B&O Museum chaps sounds like carefully rehearsed spin-meistering. Of course, I'd be more than happy to be proven totally wrong, and I'll be there photographing the grand parade of steamers in Baltimore if and when it happens...... lner4472@bcpl.net |

While some have not heard of anything happening with the NRHS convention, there is much happening. The Washington DC Chapter is hosting the 2003 NRHS Convention. We have some members from the Baltimore area helping. Only Washington DC Chapter members will be working on the convention as many (if not all) Baltimore Chapter members will be working with the B&O Museum's "Fair of the Iron Horse". Our convention will be run during the time the B&O Railroad Museum will be running their show - around July 4th, 2003. We also have a Hotel in Baltimore firmed up - The Windham Hotel. We haven't nailed down what trips we will be doing, but it should be interesting, considering what we have to work with. Hopefully, CSX will cut us some slack as we will be celebrating one of their original railroads. If anyone wants to volunteer, all they have to do is become a Washington DC Chapter member and we will be more than happy to have you volunteer your services. Just let me know - I will be working on the registration process for the convention, which, from what I understand, is quite a lot of work. rdavidsonjr@cox.rr.com |

Great news. Kudos to George who has led the reconstruction of this sweet little critter to higher than Swiss watch standards. I look forward to seeing it at work. Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |
