| Post subject: | Silverton Northern enginehouse |
Plans are being made to restore utilize the extant enginehouse of the long-abandoned Silverton Northern RR at Silverton, Colorado for winter maintenance and storage of D&RGW 2-8-0 315. See these posts on the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum: http://ngdiscussion.net/phorum/read.php?1,115281 The venture will be a cooperative effort between the Durango RR Historical Society (restored the 315), the San Juan County Historical Society (owns the building) and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which owns the track the building will connect to. In addition, a short piece of track will be relaid on the former SN roadbed for switching and car storage. The restoration and operation of the 315 has been one of the most successful volunteer efforts of recent memory and it is likely this aspect will be also. One side of the two-stall structure will be used for freight car restoration, including a couple of original SN cars long on display at Silverton. The last locomotive residents of the enginehouse were three 2-8-0s of the SN, that were shipped to the White Pass & Yukon in Alaska during WWII. All were scrapped after the war. |
