This certainly looks worse than the initial reports had stated. Of course it's impossible to tell from a photo. In any case, what a sad series of events.

I hope that the auction goes well for him as he certainly could use a little good luck for a change. A big plus for him is that the market price for scrap has gone through the roof which will give him a decent floor price for most of the stuff if no other buying interest shows up. When I looked at the rolling stock immediately after the boiler failure on the G-5 it was all in very sad (to put it politely) shape and I can only guess from looking at the pics that the years since have further deteriorated it?? Can anyone tell us what we are looking at in these photos? I found a "roster" here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsList.aspx?id=KKRR, but it does not provide much information beyond "coach." Some of it is recognizable to my western eyes; I was particularly curious about the wood open-platform car that seems to be held together by what little paint is left on it. BTW, anyone happen to know the history of the two Kettle Moraine Railroad coaches just moved to Virginia City? Thanks |

The round roof steel coaches in the 7000 series are from the Long Island; there has been some discussion as to wether they should be classed as P-54s or as some sort of trailer. The popular name for them was Ping-Pong. The wooden car, numbered 782, looks like an old subway or elevated car to me; I believe I had read that tidbit somewhere before as well. Looks like you can see right through the vents on the clerestory and out through the roof. The trucks are not original, of course- |

The open-platform car is ex-Manhattan Railway 782, built by Pullman in 1881 for the New York City elevated system. The car was transferred to the Ravenna Ordnance Plant in Apco, Ohio in July 1942 for use in shuttling workers and was retired sometime after the war. As I understand it, Mr. Cornell found the body of the car in Ohio and brought it to Pennsylvania. It was rebuilt with freight car trucks and knuckle couplers for tourist service. There's very little original material left on the car... for that matter, from the photos it appears there's relatively little car left! |

Hi, Some (much?) of the information provided on the rrpicturesarchives site is incorrect. At least one of the caboose numbers is incorrect and at least one other is suspect. Part of the problem lies with the lack of concern or knowledge, likely both, at the railroad so that nobody at KKRR seemed to know which was which or what was what! Cheers, Roger |

Actually, I think the PVM / NY Elevated coach does have a lot of the "core" body remaining... ends, framing, floorboards/trussrods, and possible windows. I'm pretty sure what is left of the roof is original... and for 127 years old, that's not bad. Interior seats, end platforms, trucks and bolsters are gone. |

Does anyone know the weight (size) of the rail stored on the flatcars? There are a number of museum worthy pieces in the collection. the Jordan spreader, two PS-1 hopper cars and tank car could all be useful as well as historic. It would be possible to replicate missing parts on the NY elevated car, if someone chose to save it. Others exist in preservation. The most interesting thing, though, is the live steam (with a Stanley Steamer engine?) parade locomotive. It may be worth half as much as the whistle located on it. O. Anderson |

ADM4, re: SY; it's the thing with all the stuff on top of it in S. Hussar's post above. (perhaps your question is an ironic response to the near-unrecognizable state of the engine?) BTW, OT (kind of), but anyone have anything to say about the Grand Canyon? Not too many people seem willing or able to turn steam into gold. Makes me wonder how private operators are expected to survive at C&TS, or hypothetically, in Scranton? RRR1 |

Alexander, the SY is the steam engine in the photo above earlier in this thread! It looks pretty bad. What I have not seen is a picture of the older steamer. |
