Hi Ed, Mitch only posted the link. The photos are actually by Bob Lyndall. In fact if Mitch had taken these he would have figured out some way to make a beautiful pan shot out of the stationary 2317 ;-)))

Seems a maintenance crew repaved a grade crossing within the yard overnight unbeknownst to 2317's engine crew. This resulted in the engine being completely derailed early this afternoon.

So nobody told the paving contractor about flangeways?

That looks like cold patch, which is made up with Tar and stones for paving in light areas. it looks to me that it was droped there when a dump truck crossed the tracks, I don't think it was put there by a paving crew.
If it was they don't know how to pave very well, It looks like one lump here and there.

Eh, if you look closely, you can see orange spray paint damn near marking the areas where patches were needed. I think this is a case of very sloppy work...that wasn't inspected prior to rail operations? Sounds fishy to me.

The engine crew was not at fault, for sure.

That poor engine has just had some very bad luck up there in recent years.
