Post subject:  WP CZ diner "Silver Plate" on the move!

From Trainorders website:

After many years of negotiation and a lot of mechanical work, the last intact California Zephyr dining car, the Western Pacific “Silver Plate”, is now on its way to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola.

The “Plate” left Railtown 1897 in Jamestown Sept. 11th for a short ride down the historic Sierra Railroad. It is scheduled to be picked up by the UP in Oakdale this afternoon and will soon be on its way to Stockton and then on to the Feather River Canyon, revisiting rails it has not graced in over 38 years. With luck, it might even travel up the Canyon in daylight this weekend.

The car is largely intact and unmodified since her CZ days. Some kitchen parts have been removed and time has taken its toll on some of the interior decorations, but a not time has the car ever been remodeled or rebuilt, unlike sister cars from the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy which went to Amtrak and have been heavily reconstructed. The WP’s other diner, the “Silver Platter”, and the sole Denver and Rio Grande Western diner, “Silver Banquet”, have been scrapped.

In Portola, she will join FRRS owned dome-lounge-dormitory “Silver Hostel, dome-coach “Silver Lodge” and Western Pacific FP7 locomotive 805-A, as well as dome-coach “Silver Rifle” (on long term loan). Immediate plans call for a complete cleaning and assessment of the car prior to opening it for public viewing at some point in 2009.
