great picture the 33 has a special place in my heart because it was the steam locomotive i grew up riding behind as a little kid on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in the early 1990's glad to see it has a good home now. |

The Amish, as a rule, are camera-shy, specifically because their "take" on the commandment of "making no graven images" (basically to ban idolatry) is extended to photography--the historical basis is founded on the way that early photographs were treated as special to the point of idols (think early lockets or carte de vistas). The Amish MAY make exceptions for trusted individuals and not-yet-baptized younger folks, or be wiling to be photographed from a great distance in a manner that allows them not to be identifiable, but as a rule it's explicitly rude to take such photos, although from a legal standpoint all the rules that apply to public property, being visible from public property, etc. that we use to photograph trains and railroad employees also applies. I've done this "dance" numerous times in Lancaster County and elsewhere in Amish country. I never take a photo in which an Amish person may be in without their explicitly knowing that I am there with a camera, allowing them the opportunity to stop their buggy, or simply move behind their horses, or a tree, or their harvester, their market stand, or whatever. Typically, they do move out of the photo angle, and seem grateful to me for respecting their choice. There are several photographers known for their photographic images of the Amish. We who have dealt with the Amish as a people call those folks "ambush artists" and "telephoto paparazzi," and we want nothing to do with them. |

It's a fine photograph, capturing a moment in time, unlikely to be repeated unless both parties would consent. Perhaps the buggy driver was enjoying the steam locomotive as much as the photographer? |
