Rare color photo from 1946, at Niagara Falls. Displayed for many years at the national museum at Ottawa, now at St. Thomas, Ontario. Renumbered 5700 by CNR in 1961, for whatever reason. http://www.divisionpoint.com/photos/CNR ... R_5703.jpg |

R_5703.jpg The reason being the intent was to preserve the first in the series of specific types of locomotives for the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa. They have preserved CNR Northerns 6200 and 6400 also. The torch had already been cut into the original 5700 by accident which was earmarked for preservation, so the number was transferred over to 5703 which had yet to reach the front of the scrap line. This engine is definitely one of the best-preserved engines that has never seen either an operational or major cosmetic restoration (at least in recent years). It looks like it could be fired up and run right now. If anyone is looking to restore a medium-sized engine to operation in the future they should have a look. Chris. |
