The 506, and Missabe 2-10-2 #502 at the Museum of Transport, had their Elesco feedwater heaters removed before being put on display, changing their looks considerably from their in-service appearances. I wonder if there were any other steam locomotives preserved where a major appliance was removed prior to being put on display, or were 502 and 506 the only ones? Les |

She had pulled the Missabe-D&NE trip on September 2nd of that year, and was used one more time for this trip on the 29th. I've heard stories that she was run down to the docks and cut up even while the metal was still warm right after that trip, but can't verify them. I was pleased even more to see the second photo of #1304. Though she was scrapped as well, a part of her still lives-- her headlight resides in my basement. Back in the early sixties the railroad sold a bunch of headlights($15.00 each) along with other memorabilia,to railfans, and my father purchased one , now passed on to me. Ed Selinsky |

Ed Selinsky Ed - Good to hear that you have the headlight off of the 1304. I don't collect railroadiana, but I sure would like to have a headlight off of a Missabe steamer! I was a rider on the 9/2/62 excursion behind #514 (a couple of my photos of that trip made David C. Schauer's "in color" Missabe book). The 514 was certainly good looking and remains my favorite DM&IR steam locomotive. Les |
