The 401 is looking good! I can't wait to see it steam again. I do have a question though, if I recall I think I heard that the locomotive received a new boiler. I have heard of few other locomotives having this done in recent years, the most notable that comes to mind being Texas State Railroad's "General Pershing" 2-8-0 300.

With that said, I'm curious what has happened to the original boilers of these locomotives, are they scrapped because they are too badly deteriorated, kept in storage or placed on display?

Steve, 401 did get a new boiler built by a company in St Louis I think. You would have to get with the museum and find out what they did with it. A new boiler cost $250K for 401.

Steve, I just looked I didn't realize you are with SR 154. How do she look so far? I'm at work right now but I do have an e-mail address for Kent up at Monticello. Great guy he will give some good tips and fixes they had on 401.

I apologize if I misrepresented myself. I think what you looked at was information about the SR 154 I was simply reposting. I am in no way affiliated with the Three Rivers Rambler or the Southern 154 project.

I'm simply a fan of Southern Railway steam and was merely posting news which I didn't know if it had been posted here yet or not. Unfortuately, there are no rail museums or preservation projects locally, even though my hometown was home to Southern Railway's Hayne Shops, which I always thought would have made a nice museum, but besides the fact that the property is still owned by Norfolk Southern, too much of the facility is gone now to really develop even if it was within the realm of possiblility.
