Red River & Gulf 106

Fine builder's photo of this 4-6-0, now rusting at Long Leaf, Louisiana. Hopefully, it can eventually look like this again.

Everything behind the stack on the 106 has been undercover since 1956, and when the museum restored the old car shop where the engine has been stored, they added enough to cover that too! The boiler jacket is still tight and not a bit of rust on it. I wish that I could say the same for the bottom of the smoke box and the smoke box door. With a little bit of luck, there are plans in the works to rebuild the remaining 2 miles of the RR&G starting this winter and the museum hopes to be able to operate motor car trains and Fernwood, Columbia and Gulf M-4 over the tracks in the spring. After that, maybe the 106!!!

The pictures and captions that you supplied are reversed as you suspected. RR&G #106 is inside the car shed, which has now been completely rebuilt, and Crowell #400 is the engine still stored outside. The #400 has been sitting in that same spot since 1954 and as you might suspect is in pretty bad shape.

I know it's blasphemy, but I kind of like the idea of preserving locomotives in their "just as they were left" state. Something about the idea that it looks like they're just sitting out in the middle of nowhere and you stumbled across them appeals to me in some kind of sick way. Heck, it can't be worse than some of the "preserved" engines out there, right?
