Post subject:  Gaskets for Adlake 1709 sealed windows

In the process of restoring our Atlantic Coast Line RPO No. 13, I have run into a problem with reinstallation of the 9 windows. The car is originally ACL 700, built by AC&F in 1915 and heavily rebuilt and modernized by ACL in 1953.

The windows are square, made by Adlake, and all have the same number (1709) stamped in the top edge of the 2-part aluminum frame. Presumably this is a part or model number.

These are double pane windows, with a clear glass exterior pane and a green tinted interior pane. When the windows were removed only 2 of the bottom rubber gaskets were salvageable, and even they are a bit hard. This bottom gasket fits (or "cleats") into an open channel on the bottom edge of the window assembly, and is thicker at the outside edge than the inner edge to compensate between the flat bottom of the window assembly and the sloped sill.

The thin stainless steel channels that seal both sides of the aluminum window assembly had a thin fabric covering with what I will call a velour texture, both on the face against the aluminum window frame and on the outer face that sealed against the window opening in the car side. I suppose this served both as a dust seal and to provide a small amount of cushioning.

Has anyone had any luck finding proper gasket materials or could direct me to the proper type of "velour" fabric to use in this application? Or, has anyone used an alternative material to seal similar windows. (Caulk is not the answer I'm looking for, even though it might be the simple fix!)

Thanks!

If this is what you are after, then you can get it from Logan Corporation, Huntington, WV, 800-669-1967.

Also try Elasto Proxy, do a web search they stock a lot of rubber products. I bought all my window gaskets for my car from them.
