This is really not the proper forum for a detailed answer; better to search for a diesel-spotter's forum or an IC/ICG forum. To elaborate on what a complicated question you have asked, I should point out that according to the Diesel Spotters Guide Update by Pinkepank & Marre (1979), by the end of 1978 IC/ICG had rebuilt a staggering 123 locos into GP8's and 343 locos into GP10's just for their own railroad, never mind locos they did for other RRs or their later "GP11" series! I've heard it joked that if you found two identical ex-Paducah GP8's or GP10's, somebody screwed up. It's a bit of an exaggeration, but the DSGU goes on for several tiny-type pages on the details of the various modifications; just to complicate things, there apparently was quite a bit of post-rebuild engine-swapping going on as well, so who knows if it has a 567B or C, or a 567D or E? The DSGU (and subsequent such spotters guides) goes into some detail about "capital rebuild programs," the impetus for the Paducah Geep, DeWitt Geeps, the AT&SF CF7 (another "model" notorious for variations galore), and other such locomotive fleets. |

Dynamic brakes removed (2nd hand units only, IC units had no db) GP8's had engines upgraded from 567B to 567BC HP increased to 1600 on GP8's, 1850 on GP10's (some sources say some rated at 2000 hp) Some units recieved newer style cabs (ex UP GP9B's). Just as an example: Not ALL "Paducah Geeps" have the four-stack manifold. Not all have the big boxy paper air filters that were later considered a "trademark" of the design. Ten units were built with 2000-hp ratings but derated by Feb. 1969 to 1850 hp, and you get to argue whether five of them are GP8's or GP10's as-rebuilt. |
