Does anyone know the present status of the Angel's Flight railway in Los Angeles? Was it ever put back into action, or was it dismantled after the fatal accident?

Well, it has not been put back into service and it has not been dismantled. I seem to recall seeing a newspaper piece that the cars were being repaired.

The biggest problem is the apparent design error associated with the winding mechanism. Instead of using a single drum the designer had used two drums (one for each car) and the problem appears to be that the connection between the drums came apart causing the one car to descend into the other. The winding mechanism will have to be replaced or otherwise fixed before it is placed back into service.
