J David, can you give us an idea of what condition she is in, and will she be restored for display, such as your Aberdeen & Rockfish 2-6-2, or do you expect her to steam again?

Tim,

If you go to the blogspot that Dave mentioned, it's very informative, especially with regards to getting this new locomotive back into operating condition. BTW, the ex-Aberdeen and Rockfish locomotive is a 2-8-2.

Sounds like a well thought out plan for steam trains too me. The ultimate in my thinking is haveing 3 running locomotives. One usually being under rebuild, one for back up and one for running. Just takes money, time and people to get the work done and other people to get out of the way. So simple huh? I also think the SY engines are the possible answer too a lot of other peoples problems. Not sure I would go for the big QJ's, too big for most shortline railroading, but the SY's could fit the bill for a lot of places. While I am not a big fan of Chinese products and they are not really historical in a US perspective, they are relatively cheap, have modern engineering and can keep steam running while you spend $300,000 rebuilding your home grown locos. May not be the answer for every application, but I think these folks are on the right track. I can't imagine this engine being worn out from use, so after the boiler work, they may have bought a real bargain. Cheers, John.

PS the other two steam locos are spectacular in my not so humble opinion.

Is the fire damage mostly just scorched paint, or will she need some significant sheet metal work too? If so, is the plan to keep the Chinese-style cab and tender tank, or will she be given a more traditional American look as part of the rebuild? Either way, it will be great to see another working steam locomotive here in New England. Congrats to the Valley Railroad!

I went to the railroad Sunday and I asked one station agent about it and he seemed to avoid the question, then the car host was talking about the steam engines and she said the rumor was that they had bought a third steam engine. I just found it funny on of the two people I heard talk about it, one seemed to say no and one seemed to say yes.

Glad to see this engine will be in good hands.
